Any child age five who is first enrolled will generally be placed in kinder-garten. To enroll, a child must have proof of immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, mumps, and red and German measles. Certain exemptions are possible due to particular health or religious reasons. All students need proof of a physical when enrolling for the first time. Children are enrolled by the school district in which they live, and the school gives assignments. School lunches are provided for a certain fee, and free and reduced lunches are available for those who meet the necessary qualifications. Also, school bus transportation is available to students who live further than a mile and a half from the school, and free use of textbooks are provided toall students. Higher Education Craven Community College Craven Community College offers technical and vocational training as well as college transfers areas of study. The main campus is located at 800 College Court in New Bern. The Havelock campus, 301 Cunningham Blvd., hosts a library, a classroom/ laboratory building and the Institute of Aeronautical Technology to prepare students for a career in Aviation Systems Technology. Mount Olive College Mount Olive College is a private, co-educational, liberal arts college with campuses in New Bern, Goldsboro, Research Triangle Park, Wilmington, and Mount Olive. Mount Olive College also offers baseball, basketball, tennis, cross-country, volleyball, golf and soccer in both men and women’s athletics. East Carolina University East Carolina University offers Distance Learning for adults who desire a college degree, but cannot manage the time to step onto an actual campus. Pamlico Community College Pamlico Community College is a two-year college that aims to provide accessible and afford-able education that also allows for degrees in vocational and technical education. Pamlico also works as a transfer school with many of North Carolina’s accredited four-year universities. Associate in Arts degrees, and Associate in Sciences degrees are also available depending upon a student’s major. Base Schools Cherry Point Schools Children of active duty Marines stationed at Cherry Point attend schools located in the district because Cherry Point offers no schools located on base. Elementary school students may attend Arthur W. Edwards elementary school and Havelock elementary school. Middle school students attend Havelock Middle, and high school students attend Havelock High. If parents wish for their children to attend a school outside their district, they must complete in writing a request for reassignment form, which may be obtained and submitted to the principal of the school that the student currently attends.
